Workers of all lands unite. The philosophers have only interpreted the world in various ways. The point however is to change it.

Detailed Biography

Karl Marx was the philosopher whose work changed the course of contemporary history, laying the foundations of scientific socialism, modern communism, and the deepest critique of the capitalist system. Born in Trier, Kingdom of Prussia, on May 5, 1818, Marx did not limit himself to theorizing about reality; his vital goal was to transform it. His writings, especially *The Communist Manifesto* and *Capital*, became the intellectual tools of the revolutions that would define the 20th century.

Historical Materialism and Class Struggle

Son of a family of lawyers and a descendant of a lineage of rabbis, Marx distanced himself from religion and law to immerse himself in Hegel's philosophy and the classical English economists. Along with his lifelong collaborator and friend, Friedrich Engels, he developed the theory of historical materialism, arguing that the economic base of society determines its social, political, and cultural structure. For Marx, the history of all societies up to the present day is the history of class struggle: a constant tension between those who own the means of production and those who only possess their labor power.

Capital and Exile in London

Due to his radical ideas and journalistic activism, Marx was successively expelled from Prussia, France, and Belgium. In 1849, he permanently settled in London, where he lived the rest of his life in often extreme poverty, largely supported by Engels' financial assistance. It was in the Reading Room of the British Museum that he dedicated decades to researching and drafting his monumental work, *Capital*, a comprehensive analysis of the laws of motion of capitalist society and the nature of labor exploitation.

An Intellectual for Action

Marx did not conceive of knowledge as something separate from political action. As a leader of the International Workingmen's Association (the First International), he sought to unify the labor movement on a global scale. His thought has decisively influenced not only politics but also sociology, economics, and history, forcing a rethinking of concepts such as alienation, commodity fetishism, and social justice.

The Monument in Highgate

He passed away in London on March 14, 1883. He was buried in a remote area of Highgate Cemetery, in a simple ceremony attended by barely a dozen people. Engels delivered a prophetic speech at his grave: "His name will live through the centuries, and with it his work." In 1954, the Communist Party of Great Britain financed the grand monument that stands today, which includes a monumental bust and is crowned by his famous slogan: "WORKERS OF ALL COUNTRIES, UNITE!". Ironically, the philosopher who dedicated his life to combating private property now rests in a private cemetery that is visited by thousands of people from all ideological spectrums.
